Meet John...
| It's
7:30 a.m. The thermometer reads -4°. A solitary
figure - tall, thin, ponytail swishing on his back
- can bee seen opening the doors of the Jesus Coffeehouse.
His name is John, and every morning his routine
is the same: unlock the doors, turn up the heat,
and put on a pot or two of coffee. The coffeehouse
is open, and for one more day the homeless have
a safe place to go to escape from the sting of minus
20° wind chill.
"I
know I don't have to be here," John says, "I want
to be here." For John, this is home. And the people
who spend their days here are his family. "I have
never been so happy in my life," he tells visitors.
"I know this is where God wants me to be."

"I
joined the Jesus Coffeehouse because of my understanding
of being homeless. I spent the better part of one winter
in an abandoned house with no heat and broken windows.
I had very little food and no help. I knew how it felt
to have no where to go and no one to give a helping hand."
"Now
I have a home and time to give. Now, not only do I give
of my time, but I am living my dream of singing God's
praises with others."
"My
free time is spent volunteering and singing. Life can
take a turn for the better, and I am a living example.
